I haven't been in prison, but I've been in county jail quite a few times. As for the skills that you bring, I think the thing that made people treat me well, & saved me from being beat up, is eloquent speech, & wearing glasses. Wearing glasses in jail seems to be the universal sign for, "Ask this guy for advice about stuff." Almost always, the advice sought is about a routine matter, so I'm able to answer it, or BS my way through it. Also, if a person is obviously mentally ill, just listen to what they have to say, & tell them that you don't know how to help them, but you understand. The main thing I think that saved my ass over eight stints is that I wear glasses, & speak well.
