Ricky's out this week, so he missed the chance to chat about Upside Down, the movie about gravity that's not Gravity. Plus, Cameron and Rhea pitch new genres to a handful of our myriad celebrity listeners.

The practical effects of this movie were really impressive. Any time Adam was putting on clothes, it was really mind-bendy. The landscapes were also really cool, but I thought suffered from too much color correction. So many shades of blue.

Also, just a lot of awkward laughing.

As requested, I am a person who understands science. The premise of this movie is taxing. Rhea is correct; the only way to have a building connecting two worlds would be for both planets to be connected at the poles and rotate about the same axis. This would never work in a practical sense because all planets and orbits have "wobble" and any relative movement between worlds would destroy any adjacent structures in weeks. Even if this was a perfect system with no wobble, it contradicts itself again. One of the first rules this film presents is that the gravity from each planet does not affect the other. Then why are these planets so close? And if there is a force holding the planets together, what is stopping these planets from plowing into each other?

I liked that they tried to use the really cool idea that if they held onto each other, their relatively similar weights would negate each other. That actually makes sense. The use of weights to transport back and forth from each world was also pretty clever. However, when their weights were negated, they wouldn't just stay on the ground, they would float towards an equidistant point between the two worlds. So as long as they hold onto each other, they would just float away from both planets and everyone. Solving every problem of this movie.

But fine, the movie can set up its own internal logic. Just stop using terms that people already know and have expectations for. Stop saying gravity and antigravity. They should have just made this a fantasy movie and replaced all the science talk (which was real gobbledegook) with mysterious magic. It would have been a lot easier to believe.
