The first thing that came to mind was "Hiro Protagonist" from the novel Snow Crash. Yeah, we get it, you're so cool that you don't care.

I want to address Jesse's increasingly frequent joke references to "sounding." I know JJGO has a well deserved reputation as "pleasantly vulgar," but this just makes me wince every time. I know you guys are against scatalogical stuff- can we put this on the list? It's intensely mentally uncomfortable.

Two things.

1. This very funny BBC video with Claudia O'Doherty

2. This compilation of ridiculous hero names (i.e. Punt SpeedChunk) from the Space Mutiny episode of MST3K

That's exactly what I came here to post. I really love me some Neal Stephenson sometimes, but man, Hiro Protagonist... wtf man?

My sister has lived in Sydney for about nine years now, and I can tell you that based on what I've seen in my visits and received second-hand from her and her wife everything Claudia said about Australia is 100% accurate.

Also someone wondered at one point what exactly "antipodes" means; it basically means the opposite side of the world--literally, "opposite feet," as in the opposite side of the globe from where you're standing. Incidentally, the actual antipodal point of Los Angeles is in the middle of the Indian Ocean, approximately 1800 kilometers southeast of Madagascar.

My best friend went to high school with a guy named "Justin Case." 13 years later, and I'm still laughing about that! Never thought about it being an awesome action hero name, but it fits :-)

When they said Australia is a hunk hothouse, I thought that would be a great bad movie hero name. Hunk Hothouse!

The Expendables movies are a treasure trove of dumb tough guy names:

Jason Statham as Lee Christmas
Jet Li as Yin Yang
Dolph Lundgren as Gunner Jensen
Randy Couture as Toll Road
Terry Crews as Hale Caesar
Jean-Claude Van Damme as Jean Vilain
Arnold Schwarzenegger as Trench Mauser
Mel Gibson as Conrad Stonebanks
Harrison Ford as Max Drummer

That episode of MST3K is GOLD. Also, Captain Santa Claus and his grandmadaughter.
