Hey all,

So this week, we debut the latest longform radio style story by me, the amazing Kevin Allison. These kinds of stories are especially dear to my heart because I feel I'm able to get more intimate, more intricate and more emotional when it's just me telling a story directly to the podcast audience through the microphone in my living room.

The second story kind of knocked me on my ass and left me fighting back tears. The way it ends it just beautiful. Really amazing stuff, Kevin! Thanks so much for sharing this.

Thanks so much Matty. I felt I'd be throwing the RISK! audience for a bit of a loop by digging into spirituality. But throwing the audience for a loop is part of our mission. There's always some other side to someone that you didn't know all that much about.

And it's interesting how, when we look back on events in our more formative years, we see we were already learning lessons we're still re-learning today.

A childhood spent with a taperecorder should have tipped me off that I might want to work in the realm of audio. But it wasn't until I was 39 that I realized I could create a podcast. Similarly, that story I told to my whole high school was the biggest moment in my performing career before The State hit the airwaves. So it shouldn't have taken me till I was 39 to realize, "Oh... telling personal stories is something I might excel at..."

So part of the value of storytelling is that in examining our pasts, we can get hugely useful reminders and tips as to how we might approach the future.

I have to say it is pretty cool that you had recordings of yourself practicing the speech. I can't imagine most people would make a recording let alone still have it.

Over the Thanksgiving break, some of my high school friends reminded me that they made a cassette tape of themselves wishing me well for the Jesuits to hand to me mid-trip. Now I'm scrambling to find that tape!
