Regarding miles up,

Airplanes regularly fly at 25,000 to 30,000 feet. A mile is 5,280 feet. So, could have been a mile or so up and still not in space.

I realized I'm still not entirely sure what a underarm crystal is. I've always imagined a Dorf golf ball sized crystal that you have to keep under your arm by keeping your arms close to your body the whole day.

Also, I've heard of Magic Eye competitions where people try to see the image as quickly as possible.
