Drew brings the case against his girlfriend Lyndy. Lyndy says that Drew's tastes and attitudes make him a hipster and that he shouldn't resist the label. Drew says it's a derogatory term and that he's NOT a hipster, anyway! Who's right? Who's wrong? Only JUDGE JOHN HODGMAN can decide.

Listen to John Judge Hodgman Episode 101: Courtlandia

That has to be the first recorded case of someone being called a hipster for liking ska music. I was hoping Jordan was going to show up as an expert witness.

Great episode. As a Canadian, though, I'm left with this nagging feeling that the Judge just labeled the entire population of Canada as a bunch of hipsters with his comments on hockey. Is he saying that hockey is a hipster sport, or only a hipster sport in the USA, where teams are located in the middle of the desert refused the right to relocate to colder climes where people care about the game (that's right, Phoenix, I'm lookin' at you...)?

I thought the judge as a whole came across as Hockey Positive. I've been a lifelong hockey fan and while I enjoy the influx of hipsters filling up the stands (I went to a Bruins season opener a few years back that only had approx 200 people in the stands, it was really sad) thier ironic interest in the sport means I don't have random conversations about 90s hockey with the people sitting around me, which is something I enjoyed.

I believe the Judge was referring to Hockey as a hipster sport in the US, there is an expectation that people in Canada are automatically some sort of hockey fans (in the same way one might assume this of US people being fans of [American] Football or Baseball). I totally understood what he meant about it being a hipster sport, it seems like a trend that Hockey is the sport you like even if you continue to say you hate sports.

Pertaining to ska, what would the decision be (re: Hipster or no) for a theoretical person, who's completely not the one writing this, who really enjoys Reel Big Fish because of the band's story being told within their own songs? When a band only has one aptly named hit song, "Sell Out", and later follows up unsuccessful albums with songs like "One Hit Wonderful" (which samples their one hit) and "Don't Start a Band", it may be difficult to describe it as anything but "meta".

So what say you to this completely made up and totally straw-mannish individual?

It's disgraceful to be a Philadelphia resident and not know what Bob & Barbara's. Of course, I passed the hipster test with flying colors.

hee hee. I didn't think that the Judge was being hockey negative. The hockey fan = hipster just surprised me. I think that the hipster sport in Canada would be lacrosse, which, although cool, is sort of "hockey for people who think that hockey is too mainstream". I still have an image of a Hoser (http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lslw3 ... o1_400.jpg) being equated with a Hipster (http://shechive.files.wordpress.com/201 ... =499&h=822) in my head!

I think it's a culturally universal thing that all LaCrosse people are assholes who went to an all boys private school.

The guy sounded like a dude from the Warped Tour from anywhere circa mid-90's to now.

All the hockey fans I know are kind of the same meat-head people who like football for the violent hits and MMA. We only have minor-league hockey in Nebraska, but getting cheap tickets and drinking a couple of beers and hoping for a fight it alright to me. If anything, USA soccer fans (Euro League in particular) are the hipsters. Liking it (seemingly) because it's different, and makes them appear to be something by liking it.
