Watching the video interviews like this one, I notice that Jesse doesn't seem to work with notes. Jesse, how much of what you ask is pre-planned and how much develops organically from the conversation itself?

I pretty much just think of some things I'd like to ask about and keep them in my head, and then let things develop. No notes. (I do try to keep the book or CD or whatever nearby, because otherwise I'll forget what it's called.)

Wow. That's impressive. I do an interview show myself, so I know going note-free is no mean feat. Did you always do that, or were your questions more scripted in the early years of The Sound?

Ehh, pretty much always like that. I used to kind of make a list of the things I wanted to touch on and refer to, but I abandoned that out of laziness.
Also, in the early years, if I was running out of steam, I could throw to Jordan or Gene.

Since its mostly off-the-cuffs, do you find yourself sometimes either interjecting too much or not enough?

Jesse, when you go food shopping, do you have a list of the groceries you might need for the upcoming week, or do you let the meals for the week develop organically from the shop itself?

I can't even do a chat interview without having my research on the person sitting in front of me.
Impressive. Good show too, they ran with the questions a lot, made it fun to listen to.

Great show, I love the Sklars and was really excited when I saw they were on. I was not dissapointed.

This was great- I liked that the tone was conversational but it was still an informative interview. Same goes for Posehn/Agee, actually. It seems like too often interviewers either spend half the time talking about themselves or ask basic questions and stand back.
