I knew Bill Withers would be interesting, but I had no idea that he would be so funny. That was an outstanding interview. Please continue to book soul legends on the show.

this comment borders on creep-town but i have to say, i love the shift in jesse's radio voice when he's interviewing someone he really, really admires. you have to be a regular listener to catch it, but it's there... just a slightly higher pitch, a little more laughter, etc. still the consummate professional but i like when a bit of the fan sneaks out.

GREAT interview. were you nervous?

I think this was easily my favorite TSOYA interview. I almost teared up a little when he talked about something finally working out "because there was a lot of stuff you thought you could do that didn't happen." Maybe it was my personal response to his answer or it could have been that it felt like it was such a real answer.

His answers felt so genuine. I could have listened to him talk for another hour--he has the somewhat rare quality of being an amazing artist who seems like he is as interesting and complex as his art. His emotional response to the question about retirement gave me chills--it's an answer that I think will stick with me for some time. I don't know if I've ever heard someone in the entertainment industry answer that question with so much conviction and wisdom.

I'm only halfway through and I can already see it'll be an all-time favorite. Thanks, Jesse.

Wow. Really masterful interviewing, Jesse. The retirement response was really powerful and truly wise, and you had the presence of mind not to jump into any of the pauses. Just a tremendous joy to listen to. When people ask me about my shirt(s) in the future, this will probably be the first show I link to.

"The Manager's Son goes to Yale,
The Bluesman's son goes to Jail."

Awesome.

Great interview, his final diatribe really hit home.

Finally had a chance to listen to this today. Was on the verge of tears many times. Not just because of the incredible music, but also because I was so overwhelmed by what he had to say about living life with dignity. And about not wanting to be "most people."

Thanks, Jesse, not only for getting this amazing interview -- but for having the patience, maturity and professionalism to spend 90% of the interview just Listening Respectfully. I really noticed and appreciated that.

Excuse me -- I'm gonna go listen again.

I know he totally shut down the idea of performing now and then, but if economics/logistics is his actual rationale and not that he just doesn't want to do it, Largo should be lobbying hard for him. It's the perfect venue and completely low key *and* great musicians hang around and will jam with whoever wants them. And any of you maxfunsters in the LA area -- if you're not hanging out at Largo pretty regularly, you don't deserve to live in LA lol. It's seriously the only thing I miss about that town and it didn't even open until after I moved away.

I am just getting to the Bill Withers TSOYA- holy shit holy shit- that was the very best show I have ever heard you do. It was really an all time get and a great job.

His voice did remind me a bit of Roy Blount Jr. though.

Awesome interview, and that recording of him from Soul Power that you played gave me goosebumps. Most definitely seeing that this weekend.

I could listen to an hour of Bill Withers just listing all the ways you could die in the Navy.

Agree with the others, really great interview.

I'm a huge music fan and definitely know a bunch of the songs that were played on the show (as most people would) but never really connected them with who the singer was. Will definitely be looking into some Bill Withers music in the near future.

I strongly recommend "Still Bill" and "Just As I Am," as well as "Live at Carnegie Hall." I love all of his other records as well, but those are the place to start.
