Matt Haughey of Metafilter and his wife Kay split household chores right down the middle, except when it comes to garbage duty. Does the person taking out the trash have "garbage hands" that are only suitable to replace the trash bag and deal with all matters dirty? You may listen to the episode and view the evidence here.

(Please note: Judge Hodgman issues his disclaimers regarding Metafilter and his gifted gavel at the top of the episode.)

A cognitive scientist! Psychology represents! Unfortunately, this episode keeps breaking for me when I download it directly. I will have to see if the feed works when I am at home.

Edit: Working via iTunes feed.

I have to admit, I was hoping that Mr. Hodgman would reference the Isaac Asimov short story Male Garbageman

The chambers cases were especially great this time. Garbage confetti, soft-core toiletries. This is a kind of world that brings wonder.

Can anyone tell me the song in the evidence video? I have it. I've heard it. I cannot place it and I for some reason think it will be both obvious and embarrassing when identified.

He mentions it in the case -- something by Phoenix (I think he said on the second album).

"North" from the Phoenix album "It's Never Been Like That".

I still can't believe I actually won as the man in a relationship. I assumed I'd lose.

Also, the part where Hodgman mocks me for not listening, I was attempting to sound like a lawyer and point out something my wife just said in order to defeat her with her own words, but I said "umm" a few too many times and it came off sounding like I had no idea what was going on. Oh well.

That decision was complete bullshit.

Taking out the garbage and replacing the bag is an atomic, single task. Only one person is required. Moreover:

1) Garbage hands
2) 33/67 (he needs to up that percentage)
3) If she's cooking dinner, there are timing issues
4) If she's not cooking dinner, the person taking out the garbage doesn't need to bother their partner to who's otherwise employed
5) Garbage hands
6) Her hands are already being stressed from multiple hand washings, why irritate them further? Shouldn't Matt want to be caressed by soft, lovely hands?
7) Judge Hodgman not siding with the wife is against precedent. Without precedent, our legal system doesn't work.
8) Garbage hands

Finally, to save other people the effort, i'll post this Phil Hartman sketch:

Oh, and the odd plumber reference alludes to something edited out, where a plumber knocked on my door during one of the first question.

So I just watched the video and these portlanders are making life way too hard. ( I am married to an expairriot of Portland, so I know about crazy people who make things too difficult.) I as many people have a very similar garbage can, and I can't figure out why they remove the inner liner. One can very simply lift the liner a couple of inches and then slip the bag out. Perhaps if the liner is not completely removed the task is easier and I believe cleaner. Thanks
