I enjoyed the interview, but I wished you would have delved more into the funny Bill James. One of the best things ever written is his section in his Historical Baseball Abstract on Don Mossi titled "The Man Who Invented Winning Ugly":
Quote: Don Mossi was the complete five-tool ugly player. He could run ugly, hit ugly, throw ugly, field ugly and ugly for power. He was ugly to all fields. He could ugly behind the runner as well as anybody, and you talk about pressure...man, you never saw a player who was uglier in the clutch.
The whole section is awesome. Hopefully, this link to Google Books will work.
For the brave, click here to view the legend, himself.

I have always been a huge fan of Bill James. There aren't a ton of people who have had such an amazing insight into something that has been around for 100 years before they were knee high to a pigs eye. Being a Red Sox hater (just anti-Boston sports teams in general), I've always though it was kind of unfair for them to have him on their side. Like if GE was to have Stephen Hawking in their R&D. What the hell is Phillips supposed to do to combat that?
And I am always amazed everyone who contacted him prior was too nearsighted to allow him to write on the side. They deserved to get that ass whooped. Great interview.

Great interview Jesse!
As a sox fan (not a bandwagon one btw..Ive been a fan since the late 80s), I'm quite happy Bill James is working for the team.
I though the interview was going to take a bit of a bad turn when he said that nerdiness is never used in a non-pejorative sense, but it turned out fine. I think it was really cool you got him on the show. Although I feel you book eclectic guests on your show, he's quite different from most of the guests you get b/c he's coming from the sports world.

Coming soon: Kenny Mayne!

Yes! He hit the longest homer I've ever seen at Wrigley. Plus he went on the DL for having nighmares about spiders.

Hey, maybe on the Live in Santa Cruz show.
Wasn't he named in the Mitchell Report?

Yes, can't say it was a shock.

Oh man, this was a great interview. Excellent questions.
I read the 1985 and 1986 abstracts cover to cover, and re-read them over and over. I never enjoyed baseball more than in those couple of years.

Was this podcast only because you only had him on the phone?
Pretty sweet interview. I feel that often about your interviews. And this was was finally someone I was sort of familiar with!
