Listening to this week's Bit Parade podcast [MP3 link] (with Jordan and Jesse as special guests), i learned that Jordan's improv ensemble, Marvin Berry, plays at the UCB on the second Thursday of every month. The second Thursday of June happens to be the day before MaxFunCon. I suspect that people may want to fly in early and amortize the cost of plane tickets across a long stay in LA.

Thus, i propose that we have a PreMaxFunConCon that involves partaking in Jordan's improv merrymaking along with other activities people may suggest.

I'm probably going going to spend about a week or so in LA, but I haven't made any concrete plans. Feel free to suggest other activities on either side of MaxFunCon, itself.

Sure -- I'm up for this.

In general, LA is a great place to see comedy. As we get closer to the date, we might start to scout out shows that will be happening in the days before and after MaxFun. I'd be willing to help with this.

FWIW, Marvin Berry isn't an improv team, it's a UCB house sketch comedy team.

My husband and I plan on spending the week preceding MaxFunCon in LA, so we will also be looking for awesome things to do.

I can't tell from the UCB website, but does Jordan Morris and Marvin Berry still play the second Thursday of every month...including June 11?

If so, was anyone else interested in going?

What about other events either before or after MaxFunCon?

I still haven't bought my tickets because i haven't worked out all my ancillary activities. I did learn that the LA poker tournaments i'd want to play won't be until the following weekend at the earliest. Same deal with the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas where the only Event i'd want to play in runs concurrent with MaxFunCon. In other words, i'm flexible in doing other activities, if anyone has suggestions.

$1500 HORSE?
would be fun to get a maxfun poker game going .. not sure how many people would be interested or how antisocial it would be to set up a game in one of the hotel rooms?

A $1500 Limit Holdem and the $5000 Pot Limit Omaha8 both start on June 12. I entered a couple $1500 Limit Holdem WSoP events in 2006 and the competition was pretty bad. A 5k event would have been outside my price range, anyway, unless i won a satellite.

I'm going to end up making a separate trip out there around June 23-28 for a couple among the $2500 Limit Omaha8, $1500 Pot Limit Omaha8, or $1500 Limit Hold’em Shootout. I'm most interested in the Pot Limit O8, since, while people play Limit Omaha Split bad enough as it is, they're even worse when it's Pot Limit.

It depends. I don't find playing poker with people who don't know what they're doing particularly fun (unless i'm making a lot of money from it). However, poker can make for very good conversation. I'm not sure what California laws would say if we played out in the open where we wouldn't be isolated from the non-poker participants.

Right. So.

Anyone up for going to see comedy on the evening or two before MaxFunCon?

(Either in addition to or separate from UCB -- I'm flex).

I used to live in LA so I will be arriving a few days early to spend time with friends. I try to get down there every month or two -- and when I'm in town, I usually go see comedy.

Always up for finding additional comedy nerds to join us!

I can't afford MaxFunCon this year, but I live in LA. Would anyone hate it if I tagged along to one of these things?

Of course -- all comedy lovers welcome.

I've been checking the calendars and haven't found anything terribly exciting yet; but many of my favorite spots haven't booked yet for June. If anyone else sees an interesting show that they would like to check out (besides UCB of course), let us know!

Let's just stay in touch and we can make more specific plans in early June.

The UCB sechdule for June is up. As expected, Mavin Berry is scheduled for 8:00 and I already made my reservation.

Reservations are a courtesy, not a binding agreement, so you may as well make one if you intend on going. Also, if you are going, please post to this thread so we can see who's coming.

I do have a couple UCB logistical questions:

- Tickets cost $5 for each show that evening. Does that mean that it's $5 for each show? Ot does the $5 get you entry and you stay as long as you want?

- Reservations for Comedy Death Ray don't open until the performers are announced. Does anyone know when that usually occurs?

I'd like to attend on the 16th, but it appears that the reservations for CDR usually sellout pretty quickly.

There are usually 2 shows per time slot. The $5.00 gets you into that time slot and then they make everyone leave. So, if you want to see the 9:30pm or 11:00pm show, you'll have to pay again. The group we are performing with, Paddington is fucking great, so I think that's going to be a pretty solid show. I've loved all the Maude shows so far, solid groups to be sure.

Not sure how CDR announces things, though I hear they twitter the lineups pretty quick.
