Last year, i tried organizing a gathering of people to see Jordan perform at the UCB Theatre on the Thursday night before MFC: The Original. Some went, but we failed to actually meet. A few more went to Comedy Death-Ray on the Tuesday after MFC (and received high fives from Chris Hardwick for their efforts).

I'm all for attempting this again. Schedules are starting to fill out for the dates surrounding MFC, so i think it's time for people to propose activities here.

The following Jen Kirkman performance appears to have been rescheduled to the following Thursday (May 13):
Quote:
For example, on Thursday, May 6, Jen Kirkman is performing at Ice House Comedy Club, 24 N Mentor Avenue, Pasadena, CA. As of 15 minutes ago, she didn't know yet whom she's performing with. Fortunately, it's not the Comedians of Chelsea Lately.

I anticipate i'll try going to Comedy Death-Ray on the Tuesday following MFC.

Any other suggestions?

I like both of those things. My wife and I will be getting into town around Tuesday, and then leaving about a week later. Maybe Wednesday if we can get Death Ray tickets.

I don't know where to go to find more ideas, LA is decidedly not my thing. We were going to go to Disneyland with a friend on one of the earlier days. MaxFunseyLand?

If airfare from Indianapolis or airports nearby doesn't come down, I'll be driving all 2,048 miles of it -- money's more of a concern than time, since I'm freelancing these days -- and might join in, depending on what's happening around town.

Not that MFC alone won't be worth the drive, but if travel is 3x as long as the actual event, I should try bettering the ratio, I think.

Bing travel (http://travel.bing.com) says you can depart Friday morning, then return on a late-night flight (leaving LAX around 10pm Sunday) for $285, and says fares are steady or dropping. I don't think you can drive for that cheap.

This link should work: http://bit.ly/amNWPM

The UCB usually doesn't release the following month's schedule until the third week or so of the month. I go there a lot. I'll probably attend CDR the week before and after, as I try to go every week. If you intend to attend CDR., the best way is to set an alarm for noon on the preceding Friday. That is when tickets always go on sale, and depending on the line-up, they can sell out in as little as an hour or so. On the plus side, it is usually the best night of live stand-up you can find anywhere for the low price of $5.90.

Thanks, Darryl. I've been checking a few times a day on Bing and Kayak, hoping for something under $250, but I doubt I'll find anything that cheap.

That's the threshold for flying vs. driving, anyway. I have a Prius and friends along the way I can stay with for a night, and given current gas prices, I figure it would be about $200-250 for gas. (Lest you think I'm crazy, I did a similar trip -- though much longer -- in the late summer of 2008, and spent $750 in gas over 9,000 miles in 30 days. If you're curious, you can read about it here: http://jasonbaldwin.us/category/big-trip/ )

But thanks for the tip, anyway. I look forward to meeting you, especially after hearing your name pop up on NNF.

64 days!

Except that gas isn't all (or even most) of the expense of doing the roadtrip. Depreciation and maintenance of putting 3500(?) miles on the Prius is more than the gas. Even if your Prius lasts 200K miles and cost you only $20K new, that's still 10 cents a mile in non-fuel costs, not including maintenance.

That's not to say you shouldn't do the roadtrip if you want to visit friends or see the country. But don't believe that you're saving money by doing it vs. flying, because you're not and it's not even close (unless you carpool and split the expenses).

I'll definitely check out your link when I get a chance. I almost drove last year because of flight prices, but was able to work it out to fly. I was going to stay with family on the way there and back, which would have been fun, so I know what you mean.

Bing has a way you can set a price for your flight and have it send you an email when it hits that level. But if I waited for a $250 flight anywhere out of Billings, I would never leave! Flights are uncommonly high. Must be a lot of demand to leave here!

However you get to MFC, I look forward to meeting you as well!

Right now my plan is to fly in the Wed. before and leave the Wed. after so I'd definitely be interested in any sort of meet-up/outing, etc, especially since I'll be traveling by myself.

Definitely checking out the Museum of Jurassic Technology.

I'm definitely down for CDR Goodness on Tuesday night, and hell since I'll be in town Monday with not much to do, if anyone wants to suggest activities/meetups then I'm all for it.

Has anyone else coming into town early booked a hotel yet? We're looking at the Burbank area, we have a friend there, and are open for recommendations/strict no-go's.

I'm staying in Rancho on Sunday night - if anyone has a late departure from ONT on Sunday, my hotel is kind of asshole-y but it has wifi and a bar (if you're not feeling like you drank enough at the Con) and you can check in for your flights in the lobby. Plus there is a plethora of the country's finest chain restaurants in the vicinity if anyone wants to grab dinner/was too hungover for breakfast and lunch when they were served.

My wife and I are looking at staying at a Burbank motel called The Tangerine Motel for our LA nights before MFC. We have a friend nearby with whom we're going to be spending a lot of time. Thing is, we cannot find any reviews of the place, since it's a fresh remodel of an older motel.

Does anyone local know anything about it?

Yeah if anyone can give me a heads up on "areas to avoid for hotels" that would be appreciated.

Theresa and I had a great experience staying at the Biltmore downtown. It's very four star, in a very deco way. Not crazy expensive, though - I think it was like $130/night or something. For folks looking for a fancy place to stay.
