The 'does it hold up' action item on JJGo was one of my favourites. It has really stuck with me. I've gone back to a few childhood favourites to see if they hold up. Some have. Some haven't.
This got me thinking: How would people feel about a sort of Does It Hold Up club?
What I was thinking was that we could agree to collectively (re)visit some movies that were important to us in years gone by. I imagine that some of us will almost certainly not have seen the movie, which results in a different perspectives. Sure, maybe Caddyshack holds up for someone who loved it when they were a kid, but maybe someone finally watching it for the first time would find it stupid. I think that we could perhaps do to one a month.
I also don't think this needs to exclusively be movies that were meaningful to us when we were kids. Maybe you loved Fight Club when it came out, but imagine it has not aged well, and haven't watched it to see if it has or not. Or, maybe you told everyone in your film studies class that of course you loved Citizen Cain, but now you wonder if your twenty-something pretentions clouded your actual judgement.
If others are on board, we just need to pick a movie to start with.

This sounds great. I pretty much watched nothing but Labyrinth, Gremlins 2, and Troll 2 when I was younger, so I missed out on a lot of classics. I legitimately loved those as I child, so I don't get a lot of the ironic love about them today.

I would say Labyrinth and Gremlins 2 are in a very, very different category than Troll 2.

Oh this sounds so fun!
I watched Hackers recently and, holy shit, does it ever not hold up. The rollerblading!! I also saw Stripes for the first time last year and I bet it would have been much better if I had remembered it from my childhood.

GoldenEye (the movie) came out when I was like 8, and I thought it was the coolest thing. I recently watched it with a friend who'd never seen it, only the Daniel Craig ones...it sure seems silly now.

I sometimes wonder to myself whether Willow holds up but I haven't found it within me to check yet.
Speaking of Val Kilmer supporting roles, if anyone's wondering about Top Gun I'm here to tell you that yes, it does.

Last time I saw labyrinth, it was playing a midnight show at a local theater. I brought my flask and thoroughly enjoyed it.
But as far as revisits - recently watched Robot Jox and Crash 'N Burn which I hadn't seen in so long that I only barely remembered. I was a big of a robot enthusiast...
Neither really held up and Crash 'N Burn I remember my parents turning off and not letting me watch because of a shower scene. Also remember being terrified of Crash 'N Burn. Now, I can't imagine the movie taking itself seriously. Both failed.
Also, picked up Poltergeist on the cheap, and boy does that hold up! Hadn't watched it in years. I forgot about Coach and I forgot that it's on the best movies ever. One of the movies that makes you glad there are movies.

Willow is pretty fun, but it is exceptionally stupid. Be wary.

I think Willow holds up. It is exactly what it wants to be, a fun movie that doesn't overreach. One of my favorites.

I'm not coming down either way about whether or not the movie holds up, but I sure can't hear the name without thinking of this quote:
"A lot of my movies are about a little guy against the system, and this was just a more literal interpretation of that idea." -- George Lucas
That is hilariously tonedeaf and misguided, hehehe.

As the guy who started this, I guess it's time to chime in.
How about:
1. Robocop
2. Willow
I think we can start a thread: DIHU: Robocop and then people can start chiming in as soon as they've watched it. We should try to avoid reading the thread until we've watched to avoid prejudicing our perspective - or not, we're all adults.
We can play the first by ear for how long we keep that movie on the go before introducing the next. I know there is no reason people can't join later and rehash the discussion, but I also think it'd be good to also have one agreed upon movie at a time.
So, are people in?
